Teaching and Employment History

  
1999 - Present EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Chicago Semester.

The Chicago Semester is an intern-ship program for nine private liberal arts colleges that includes six colleges from the Reformed tradition including Calvin, Hope, Dordt, Northwestern, Central and Trinity Christian Colleges. Participating colleges include Aquinas, Briar Cliff and Spring Arbor colleges. I perform all administrative functions including preparation of a budget and oversight of 20 full time and part time staff persons. I am seminar leader of "The Metropolitan Seminar," which introduces students to the city in all facets, and I oversee and develop the Center's Library and Resource Center.
Summer 2001:    UIC/MUPP RESEARCH INTERNSHIP, Uptown Hull House Association and Uptown Community Development Corporation (UPCORP). Research was on economic issues and economic development needs of Uptown's immigrant and refugee population.
Spring 2000-Present:    ADJUNCT FACULTY, North Park University/SCUPE. Course Organizer and Instructor in courses: "Urban Policy and Community Planning," for Master of Arts in Community Development program; and "Globalization and the City" for SCUPE.
1992-1999:    FACULTY ASSOCIATE and Practicum Group Supervisor, Chicago Metropolitan Center (now known as Chicago Semester). Teach the Metropolitan Seminar, and was a Practicum Group Leader, supervising 16-24 students each semester. Director of CMC Library and Resource Center and Coordinator of CMC's Summer Faculty Institute projects. Gave leadership to updating and developing computer infrastructure for CMC staff and students.
1988- 1992.    DIRECTOR of Chicago Center for Public Ministry, An internship program in urban ministry and public policy for seminarians and graduate students. CCPM was sponsored by the Community Renewal Society and four graduate theological schools, including McCormick, Meadville-Lombard, Lutheran and Chicago Theological seminaries. As Director, I was responsible for recruiting faculty, recruiting and placing students, developing brochures and public relations materials, and developing programming for the Center. As Director, I also had the responsibility of overseeing the budget while reporting to a Steering Committee comprised of the Executive Director of the Community Renewal Society, the Presidents and Academic Deans of the sponsoring theological schools. I taught in several courses, including

1986-1990:    TEACHING ASSISTANT. History. University of Illinois at Chicago. While finishing my Ph.D. thesis, I taught the following courses, all self-contained 1986-1990.
  • "American Urban History: Colonial Times to Progressive Era."
  • "American Urban History: The Progressive Era to the Present."
  • "Doers and Thinkers: An Introduction to American Intellectual History."
  • "Reform in American History: Antebellum, Progressive and Civil Rights Eras."
  • "Revivalism and Social Reform: Religion in American History."
  • "Liberated Jesus and Bourgeois Paul: The New Testament in its Historical, Social, and Political Context."
1984-1988:    RESEARCH DIRECTOR (1984) AND DIRECTOR (1986) of the Institute on the Church in Urban Industrial Society. Was a national training and information program on urban industrial mission, sponsored by six national denominations, including the Presbyterians, UCC, Methodist, American Baptists, Unitarians, and Episcopalians.
  • As Director, I was responsible to develop programming within the constraints of a budget; produce the necessary promotional materials for events and publications that came forth from the organizations; called meetings and did Executive Report summaries for the Executive Board which included denominational executives and urban/social ministry project officers for 6 mainline Protestant denominations.
  • As Chief Program Officer, I developed workshops for church leaders in the following three areas: Community Economic Development; Church-Based Community Organizing, and Urban Ministry. Partnerships with organizations such as the Community Workshop for Economic Development and the Organize Training Institute of Oakland, Ca. resulted in successful summer seminars.
  • I Compiled workbooks and bibliographies, among them Fighting Against Hunger, Homelessness and Joblessness; Congregations and Community Organizing; and The Struggle for Peace, Justice and Sanctuary, co-edited with Dick Simpson, Political Science, University of Illinois at Chicago.Did City Profiles on Chicago, St. Louis, Atlanta, Richmond, noting political, social, and economic issues facing those cities as documents for denominational strategic planning process.
1981-1984:    STAFF with SCUPE, Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education. I initiated and developed the SCUPE Library and Resource Center, published bibliographies and resource materials for urban ministry practitioners, churches and publications, and taught in two classes;
  • "A Biblical Approach to Urban Culture" (First Corinthians]; and
  • "A History of Urban Christianity."
    In these courses, I recruited guest speakers, lectured, developed the syllabus and content materials, and provided extensive bibliographies for students and participants.
1977-1981:    STAFF and DIRECTOR of the Urban Training Institute, New Orleans, La. The UTI was a program of the Trinity Christian Community, a Presbyterian-sponsored urban mission project in New Orleans. There, I taught in a lay institute, and later developed the Urban Training Institute, recruiting college and seminary students to participate in what was primarily a summer program. During the year, I taught in the Trinity Christian Training Institute, a lay Bible Institute sponsored by TCC. I also directed another ministry of TCC, Annunciation House, a men's rehab house for ex-offenders, homeless and youth drifters.
1968-1977:    Worked in several capacities while pursuing college and graduate school education including youth social services worker and a counselor in two separate hospitals.
